Circumnuclear Star Clusters in the Galaxy Merger Ngc 6240, Observed with Keck Adaptive Optics and the Hubble Space Telescope

چکیده
Q1 We discuss images of the central 10 kpc (in projection) of the galaxy merger NGC 6240 at H and K 0 bands, taken with the NIRC2 narrow camera on Keck II using natural guide star adaptive optics. We detect 28 star clusters in the NIRC2 images, of which only 7 can be seen in the similar spatial resolution, archival WFPC2 Planetary Camera data at either B or I band. Combining the NIRC2 narrow camera pointings with wider NICMOSNIC2 images taken with the F110W, F160W, and F222Mfilters, we identify a total of 32 clusters that are detected in at least one of these five infrared (kc > 1 m) bandpasses. By comparing to instantaneous burst, stellar population synthesis models (Bruzual & Charlot) Q2 , we estimate that most of the clusters are consistent with being 15Myr old and have photometric masses ranging from 7 ; 10 to 4 ; 10 M . The total contribution to the star formation rate (SFR) from these clusters is approximately 10M yr , or 10% of the total SFR in the nuclear region. We use these newly discovered clusters to estimate the extinction towardNGC6240’s double nuclei and find values of AV as high as 14mag along some sight lines, with an average extinction of AV 7 mag toward sight lines within 300 of the double nuclei. متن کاملA Stellar Dynamical Mass Measurement of the Black Hole in Ngc 3998 from Keck Adaptive Optics Observations
We present a new stellar dynamical mass measurement of the black hole in the nearby, S0 galaxy NGC 3998. By combining laser guide star adaptive optics observations obtained with the OH-Suppressing Infrared Imaging Spectrograph on the Keck II telescope with long-slit spectroscopy from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Keck I telescope, we map out the stellar kinematics on both small spatial sca...
متن کاملKeck Spectroscopy of Two Young Globular Clusters in the Merger Remnant Ngc 3921
Low-resolution, ultraviolet-to-visual spectra of two candidate globular clusters in the merger remnant NGC 3921 (cz LG = 6021 km s−1) are presented. These two clusters of apparent magnitude V ≈ 22.2 (MV ≈ −12.5) lie at projected distances of about 5 kpc (0.9Reff ) from the center and move with halo-type radial velocities relative to the local galaxy background. Their spectra show strong Balmer ...
متن کاملDynamical Evidence for a Luminous , Young Globular Cluster in NGC 1569
Recent high-resolution observations with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) reveal that star clusters of extraordinary luminosity and compactness are commonly found in a variety of starburst systems. There has been much speculation that these clusters represent present-day analogs of young globular clusters. Using the HIRES echelle spectrograph on the Keck 10 m telescope, we obtained high-dispers...
متن کاملNicmos Observations of Interaction-triggered Star Formation in the Luminous Infrared Galaxy Ngc 60901
High-resolution 1.1, 1.6, and 2.2 km imaging of the luminous infrared galaxy NGC 6090 obtained with NICMOS on the Hubble Space Telescope is presented. These new observations are centered on the two nuclei of the merger and reveal the spiral structure of the eastern galaxy and the amorphous nature of the western galaxy. The nuclear separation of 3.2 kpc km s~1 Mpc~1) indicates that NGC (H0 \ 75 ...
